WHAT IS CBT?
CBT stands for Computer-Based-Testing. It is a method of exam delivery by use of a computer at a proctored vendor site.

HOW ARE TEST QUESTIONS FORMATTED ON CBT EXAMS?
CBT exam questions are standard multiple-choice, similar in appearance to paper-and-pencil exam questions. With CBT, typically one question will appear on the screen at a time.

DOES IT TAKE MORE TIME TO COMPLETE A COMPUTER‐BASED EXAM COMPARED TO A PAPER-AND-PENCIL EXAM?
All certification exams, whether they are computer-based or paper-and-pencil, are two (2) hours in duration. If you are taking an exam with multiple parts (for example, CWI, Parts A and C), each part is two (2) hours in duration. Most exam-takers find that it takes less time to complete an exam, because the process of answering questions is more efficient. However, expect to be at the test center for approximately three hours (per part) as additional time is needed for check-in/check-out, and to review the pre-exam tutorial.

No. Prometric’s computer-based exams are offered only in secure, proctored testing centers, ensuring a professional, consistent testing environment and reducing the opportunity to cheat by protecting the security and integrity of the exam questions.

DURING THE COMPUTER TEST, CAN I SKIP QUESTIONS AND GO BACK?
Yes. You can even mark questions that you’ve skipped so that they’re easy to return to. This is a good testing strategy: to skip a question that’s going to eat up too much time and instead move on to other questions you’re more confident with; then you can come back when you have time left over and review the questions you had skipped. I LIKE TO MAKE NOTES WHEN I’M TESTING, ESPECIALLY WITH QUESTIONS INVOLVING CALCULATIONS; HOW DO I DO THIS ON A COMPUTER TEST?
The exam proctor at the Prometric testing center will provide you with a pencil and scratch paper for the exam. When you finish the exam, you will need to turn in the scratch paper to the proctor who will then shred the paper. (This is for exam security purposes.)

Yes. Scratch paper is available at the computer testing center for taking notes during the exam. Candidates will need to submit their scratch paper at the end of the exam and the scratch paper will be shredded.

I ALREADY KNOW I WON’T SCORE AS WELL ON A COMPUTER TEST AS A PENCIL-AND-PAPER TEST. THAT’S NOT FAIR.
The testing experience may be different but your scores are unlikely to be. The scientists who design and study the operation of certification exams have demonstrated over many decades that in aggregate, there are no meaningful differences in scores between paper-based and computer-based exams.

WILL THE PASSING STANDARDS CHANGE FOR THE COMPUTER-BASED EXAM?
No. The passing standards will remain the same. The passing score is determined by the certification's corresponding AWS standard that governs it; in the case of CWI, the standards is AWS QC1.

Before you leave the Prometric testing facility, you will be given a Notice of Completion stating a pass/fail status. Please note: this score report is only preliminary, pending verification from AWS. Your official score report will come directly from AWS.

WHEN DID AWS CHANGE TO CBT?
AWS has been using Prometric to administer its CWS, CWSR, CWI endorsements, and SCWI exams since late 2016. In May, 2019, Part A (Fundamentals) and Part C (Codebook) of the CWI exam, were added to the AWS Prometric CBT catalog.

WHAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG AT THE PROMETRIC TESTING CENTER?
In the unlikely event that some unforeseen circumstance at a Prometric center negatively impacts your testing experience, be sure to report your issue to the Prometric staff. The feedback exam candidates give to Prometric test supervisors is recorded and reported to AWS staff, so that the incident can be investigated.

The Application Process – General

WILL THE APPLICATION/REGISTRATION PROCESS CHANGE WITH THE LAUNCH OF COMPUTER-BASED TESTING?
The application process will remain the same. Candidates will complete an application form and pay for the exam as usual. Once the application is verified by AWS staff, the candidate will receive a confirmation letter with a Prometric eligibility code permitting the candidate to schedule their exam at a Prometric testing center.

For CWS, CWSR, and SCWI exams, application deadlines are flexible, depending on your scheduling preferences and availability to take the exam at Prometric. Candidates will find the best availability at Prometric sites when scheduling at least thirty (30) days in advance. In general, if you schedule your exam at least 30 days in advance, your Prometric testing site should be available.

CAN I PICK WHAT START TIME MY EXAM WILL BE?
Prometric schedules exams in windows, typically a morning window and an afternoon window, and you may select one or the other depending on availability. You will not be able to choose a specific start time (e.g. 10:30am), but select an available time slot in either the morning or the afternoon.

Upon registering for your exam, you will receive a confirmation email with an elibigility ID that you use to schedule it.

HOW DO I SCHEDULE A CBT EXAM?
For CWI examinations that include the Part B practical portion, the application and scheduling process will remain the same for Part B only. For all other non-practical exams, you will receive an eligibility ID with your confirmation letter. You can then schedule an exam with Prometric once you receive your confirmation letter by going online to register at www.prometric.com/aws or calling their 1-800-864-5257.

WHAT IS AN "ELIGIBILITY CODE"?

HOW MANY DAYS IN ADVANCE CAN A CANDIDATE CANCEL THEIR EXAM AT PROMETRIC?
Your exam date is tied to your eligibility code. If you cancel thirty (30) days or more in advance of your exam, you will not be subject to Prometric's cancellation and rescheduling policies and fees.

You can reschedule or cancel a test two (2) business days prior to your appointment by contacting Prometric directly. If you are scheduled for a Monday exam, you must reschedule or cancel on Friday (which is the previous business day). Both AWS and Prometric, fees will apply when cancelling or rescheduling your exam between 2 and 30 days of your appointment. Please note: a delayed testing date must still be within the 60-day eligibility window for CWI. Additionally, a cancellation will nullify your opportunity to test without additional fees to AWS.

If an eligibility code is used for scheduling the Prometric exam, the customer is subject to Prometric's cancellation and rescheduling policies and fees. These fees are collected by Prometric directly from the exam candidate. 30 days or more in advance of the scheduled date does not incur any fees.

WHY CAN’T I TAKE THE CWI EXAM ALL IN ONE WEEKEND LIKE BEFORE?
Depending on availability at your local Prometric testing center, taking all three parts of your CWI exam on the same weekend may be possible. Once you receive your confirmation letter with eligibility code, you may be able to schedule CWI Part A and CWI Part C for the Sunday after a Saturday administration of the CWI Part B.

If you choose to cancel any part of your in-progress exam before all three parts are completed, you will forfeit both the entire Prometric exam fee and the full AWS fee, and you will be required to retake all three parts of the exam again. An incomplete exam counts as an attempt towards the total number exams allowed.

Depends on which you schedule – you can choose. When you schedule your exam, you are given the option to choose the order in which you prefer to take Parts A and C of your exam.

Prometric treats CWI Part A and CWI Part C as two separate exams, and thus they are scheduled separately. Although they may be on the same day, they may be some hours apart, depending on the availability of various exam seats at the local Prometric center.

WHEN DOES CBT ROLL OUT INTERNATIONALLY?
Computer-based testing for the CWI Exam, Parts A and C, will begin in May 2019 for both international and US examinees.

FOR INTERNATIONAL CANDIDATES, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY ELIGIBILITY CODE?

Once an application is processed, eligibility codes for parts A and C are created and emailed directly to the candidate. AWS Coordinators will send a follow-up email to the Agency within 24 hours of processing with all eligibility letters.

Please bring a current government issued form of identification (e.g. photo ID or driver’s license, passport) that exactly matches the information that Prometric has in its records. You will be allowed to bring an AWS pre-approved calculator. For open book exams, you will be allowed to bring in references that are specifically stated in the exam’s Body of Knowledge [is there a page on our site where someone can link?]. You may bring in a hard copy of the reference bound in a three-ring binder, or in the original printer binding:

Candidates are allowed to bring scientific, construction, or four-function calculators. A basic, four function calculator will also be provided on your computer screen during your exam at Prometric. Most exams that Prometric offers are closed-book exams, so test supervisors may initially be unfamiliar with the AWS rules for codebook exams. Prometric test supervisors are required to examine codebooks to ensure that they meet AWS’s requirements for the exam. Candidates may tab or highlight their codebook prior to the exam, but loose-leaf papers or sticky-notes are not permitted. Please be sure that your codebooks are free from loose-leaf papers or sticky-notes before presenting to the Prometric test supervisor, or you may not be permitted to bring it into the exam with you. If you believe you are unfairly being denied use of your codebook during your exam, please log the issue with the test center administrator. In some cases, it may be possible for the test center administrator to contact AWS for clarification on the rules while you’re still there. IS THERE A SCHEDULED BREAK IN THE MIDDLE OF CWI PART A OR CWI PART C?
There are no scheduled breaks during the two-hour exam. If you need to leave the room during the test, you may do so with the proctor’s guidance. However, the exam clock will continue to run while you leave the room and you will not be given time after the exam ends to compensate for the time you were out of the room.

Breaks will be allowed during an exam but will be counted against your allotted time. If you need to leave the room, please notify the proctor. Yes. The computer software at Prometric has an option called flagging. Exam candidates can flag questions and come back to them later. However, all questions must be completed before time expires. Candidates will not be given time after the exam to review questions that were flagged.

WHAT IF I FAIL TO APPEAR FOR THE EXAM AT A PROMETRIC TESTING SITE?
If you fail to appear for the exam, you will forfeit the entire exam fee from both Prometric and AWS. AWS will consider waiving the fee forfeiture in the case of a medical or other emergency. Your request for such a waiver must be made in writing and supported by verifying documentation from a third party. For example, in the case of a medical emergency, a written statement from your physician which clearly states that you were physically unable to appear for the exam due to personal or immediate family medical issues is required. If you have another type of emergency, then you must provide third party verification for your late withdrawal notice or the reason you were unable to sit for the scheduled exam. Your request must be received within ten business days after the exam dates. Requests received after the ten-business-day timeframe, or that are not supported by verifying documentation, will not be reviewed. Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis after ten ten-business-day timeframe.

Historically, CWI exam candidates have been taking Part B before completing the other parts, although all three parts were offered on the same day. Because Part B requires the use of physical samples and tools, it is more efficient for CWI candidates to take this part of the exam first, followed by Parts A and C at later dates. Parts A and C can now be taken in whichever order the candidate prefers. Although Part B must be completed first in time, all parts are being scored together as a single exam.

Eligibility codes for A and C will be provided shortly before the Part B test, allowing the candidate/agent to schedule Parts A and C soon after the Part B exam has been completed. Eligibility Start and End dates will be limited to 60 days after the Part B date. Scores for all three Parts are not reported until all parts have been completed. Failure to sit for any Part of the exam will result in a zero (0) score for that Part.
